Top rankings for L&S graduate programs in U.S. News & World Report

April 7, 2021

UC Berkeley’s College of Letters and Science received national recognition in the 2022 U.S. News & World Report rankings of graduate programs. English, History, and Sociology all received #1 rankings, underlining the exceptional quality and depth of graduate education at L&S, and over thirty L&S programs and specialties earned top ten rankings this year.

“The disciplines of the Humanities have been a pillar of Berkeley's strength from the moment of its founding,” said Anthony Cascardi, dean of the Arts & Humanities division. “To this day, they stand as the best among the very best. That Berkeley English is yet again the top-ranked department in the country for graduate study is a fine tribute to the brilliance, dedication, and energy of our faculty and students.”

While Berkeley is consistently in the top tier of national and international rankings for academic excellence, L&S proudly leads these prestigious rankings, year after year. The programs and specialties in the divisions of Arts & Humanities and Social Sciences recognized this year for being among the best in the country are varied and diverse.

Raka Ray, the dean of the Social Sciences division, remarked, “Despite the constrained resources of a public university, the very best graduate students come to L&S because they want the training to become Berkeley social scientists and thinkers. I couldn’t be prouder of this exceptional, diverse, committed intellectual world that is Berkeley Social Sciences.”

U.S. News & World Report does not rank all graduate programs annually, but L&S’s programs in the divisions of Biological Sciences and Mathematical & Physical Sciences were also evaluated recently and received top ratings.

A complete list of all the top-ranked UC Berkeley programs can be found on the U.S. News & World Report website. There are many programs it doesn’t rank, but for those it does, here are the most recent ratings for all the areas in which L&S has PhD programs.
