Political Science administrative director honored with Social Sciences Distinguished Service Award

May 27, 2025

Political Science Administrative Director Serena Groen received Berkeley Social Science’s Distinguished Service Award for her outstanding work in her department.

Leading a team of 12 staffers, Groen’s efforts help achieve political science’s goals and create a more inclusive and supportive environment for faculty, staff and students.

Groen, who comes from a proud family of Cal employees, has been working at UC Berkeley for 17 years. In addition to Social Sciences, where political science is housed, she has worked for the Lawrence Hall of Science and Rausser College of Natural Resources in the past.

Groen spoke to Berkeley Social Sciences about her work at political science  and what the award means to her.

Please tell us more about your background and what led you to Cal.

Serena Groen: I have been employed at UC Berkeley since February 2008. My first role was with the Lawrence Hall of Science, where I gained a strong foundation in campus financial systems and operations. In 2014, I transitioned to the research administration team supporting the College of Natural Resources. There, I had the opportunity to work closely with faculty and students from a wide range of disciplines, helping them secure external funding for a variety of exciting research projects.

Prior to my time at Berkeley, I worked as a wedding event coordinator for a family-owned business. That role allowed me to express my creative side, and I truly enjoyed working with couples to bring their visions to life. However, I quickly realized that the event industry can be a demanding and unpredictable environment, and I began to seek greater long-term stability in my career.

UC Berkeley has always been close to home for me—literally and figuratively. I come from a proud family of Cal employees, including my mother, grandmother, aunt and sister, all of whom built fulfilling careers and eventually retired from the university. We take great pride in being a family that has flourished thanks to the opportunities and community that Berkeley provides.

What kind of work do you do for the Political Science Department?

Serena Groen: I serve as the Administrative Director for the department, which means I am responsible for overseeing all aspects of administrative operations and policy implementation across the entire unit. I currently manage a team of 10 career staff and 2 student employees, ensuring that our work supports the department’s academic mission and strategic goals.

How did you feel about winning the Distinguished Service Award?
Serena Groen: I felt incredibly honored and humbled to have been selected for this award. It’s deeply meaningful to know that the tireless work we do day in and day out is seen and appreciated by others in our community and beyond. I truly believe this recognition reflects the collective dedication of our entire staff — not just my own contributions — and I’m proud to be part of such a committed and hardworking team.

What motivates you and your accomplishments?
Serena Groen: My accomplishments are often driven by a deep sense of responsibility and pride in the work we do. I’m especially motivated by collaboration — when people come together with shared goals, I feel energized to contribute my best. Knowing that my efforts help create a more inclusive, supportive and effective environment for our academic community is what keeps me going every day.
