Arts & Humanities (HUM) Divisional Teaching Opportunities

The Dean of Arts and Humanities Office invites proposals for new teaching opportunities in the division: HUM R1A “Global Humanities I”; HUM R1B “Global Humanities II”; and HUM 50 “Our Times.” These large-enrollment, lower-division courses were devised by the Task Force on the Arts and Humanities for the Future in order to provide opportunities for lower-division students who are exploring the arts and humanities to have deep engagement with our faculty. Studies have shown that such early engagements are especially meaningful to students, and have a profoundly positive effect on the recruitment and retention of new students. These courses will introduce students to the pleasures, rigor, and relevance of humanistic study, and all the potential within it.

Each course will be provided with a grant of $1,000 for course development. All student credit hours (SCH) from these large enrollment courses will be returned to the professor’s home department, and the Dean’s Office will fund the associated GSI positions. Awards do not include a course buyout; please discuss with your Chair before proposing a course.Service to the division in teaching these courses will be especially noted in promotion cases.

Global Humanities

HUM R1A & R1B

HUM R1A and HUM R1B are large lecture courses that fulfill the R&C requirements, with faculty-led lectures and GSI-led small, writing-intensive sections. The theme of these courses is “Global Humanities.” A sample syllabus for HUM R1A is available here(link is external), and a sample syllabus for HUM R1B is available here(link is external). The sample syllabi we’ve provided outline the R&C assignments for the course; topics and course materials are open to faculty development.

HUM 50 is concerned with the impact of the arts and humanities upon crucial questions of our times: the environment, technology, and social and racial justice. Topics and course materials are wholly open to faculty development.
