Graduate Student Support Funds in the Biological Sciences

Graduate students are essential to the research enterprise, teaching, and our institutional reputation. Biological Sciences seeks to expand the number of graduate fellowship endowments. This increases stable, multi-year support to ensure the size and quality of our incoming graduate students. Below, you will find a list of current graduate student support funds in the biological sciences.

The Nancy Walls and Randy Schekman Fellowship

This fund supports high-achieving doctoral students in the Department of Molecular &  Cell Biology.

The Dr. Saul and Gordon Kit Fellowship Fund

This fund enables promising graduate students to pursue advanced education in animal virology, including virus pathogenesis and cellular antiviral defenses, virus-associated tumor biology/biochemistry, and viral vaccines. 

The Alper Fellowship in the Neurosciences Fund 

This fund supports graduate students affiliated with the Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute.

The Anthony Barnosky Honorary Fund for Graduate Student Support

This fund provides graduate student support, with a preference for paleontological research activities at the University of California Museum of Paleontology. Recipients are graduate students affiliated with the University of California Museum of  Paleontology who demonstrate a high level of academic distinction.

The Shurl and Kay Curci Foundation Ph.D. Fellowship Program

This fund supports students in the Biological Sciences Division who have completed the first two years of the Ph.D. program. The program is intended to provide funds for students in years four and five of their graduate careers. Nominations are made by the division.

The Shurl and Kay Curci Foundation Ph.D. Scholarship Program

This fund supports incoming graduate students in the life sciences, with an emphasis on women and international students.

The Frank F. Davis Endowed Fund for Graduate Fellowships in the Biological Scienes

This fund supports high-achieving graduate students in the Biological Sciences Division. The fellowship is open to all students, regardless of race, creed, or national origin.

The DNT Discovery Fellowship in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology 

The fund supports fellowships for 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year doctoral students in Molecular & Cell Biology. It supports students with a demonstrated research excellence that has the potential to unravel fundamental molecular mechanisms impacting health and disease. 

The Douglas M. Fambrough III, Ph.D. 1996 Fellowship 

This fund supports doctoral students in the Department of Molecular & Cell Biology.

The Douglas J. Gates and Willi Family Endowed Graduate Fellowship

This fund provides support to graduate students in the Department of Integrative Biology.

The KAG Graduate Fellowship in the Basic Sciences

This fund supports doctoral students in the basic sciences, such as Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, broadly defined.

The Kang Family Fellowship

This fund supports high-achieving doctoral students pursuing research in biotechnology.

The Alexander V. Nichols Fellowship

This fund supports high-achieving graduate students studying biophysics, biochemistry, and/or related fields.

The Gemma L. Niermann Fund

This fund supports Ph.D. candidates in the Graduate Group in Endocrinology. Preference is given to women candidates over the age of 35. 

The Nancy and Richard Robbins Fellowship in Biological Sciences 

This fund supports students in the Biological Sciences Division who have demonstrated a commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion, have overcome disadvantaged social or educational backgrounds, and/or have the ability to contribute to a diverse educational environment.

The Sidney MacDonald Russell Family Graduate Student Support Fund

This fund supports students in the Center for Emerging and Neglected Diseases (CEND.) It supports graduate students who have demonstrated a high level of academic distinction, working in areas of emerging and neglected diseases. The students’ nature of study may include investigating biological processes and environments underlying viral infection, effective treatments and vaccine development, technology and diagnostics, and international policy, law, and global health economics.

The TUYF Charitable Trust Fund for Graduate Fellowships in Medical Science, Oceanography and Environmental Science

This fund supports high-achieving graduate students whose basic research focuses on any aspects of medical science, oceanography, or environmental science. Preference is given to students who are citizens of, or otherwise strongly affiliated with, Mainland China, Hong Kong, or Thailand.

The Judy and Patrick Young Fellowship

This fund supports graduate students in the biomedical sciences, such as bioengineering, molecular and cell biology, etc., with an emphasis on gene research for biomedical applications. Preference is given to students with Chinese ancestry.
