I received a score of 3 on an AP English exam. Will this score satisfy Reading & Composition (R&C)?

For California community college transfer students who completed the 7-course pattern(link is external) admission requirement but did not complete Cal-GETC(link is external) or IGETC(link is external), their R&C requirement may not be satisfied upon admission. See UC-E and R&C Requirement(link is external)for a chart on course and exam combinations, which explains how some transfer students could be short half or the full R&C requirement.

A score of 3 on an AP English exam may be acceptable to satisfy requirements for UC 7-Course Pattern or UC IGETC/Cal-GETC; however, if you are not completing the full certification for UC IGETC/Cal-GETC, a score of 3 (which can satisfy one of the two courses for the 7-Course Pattern UC-E English composition requirement) will not satisfy the R&C requirement. A minimum score of 4 or higher is required to satisfy the R&C requirement as published on the Guidelines for Reading & Composition(link is external).

We highly recommend that students complete UC-E courses that articulate to R&C A and R&C B in order to satisfy the requirement in full (or plan to submit official AP scores for R&C if you have a minimum score of 4).

Alternatively, completion of two English composition (UC-E) courses will guarantee satisfaction of one half of Reading & Composition (R&C A), and you may proceed with taking an R&C B course at Berkeley to satisfy the requirement in full.
