Stone Center Summer Institute on Inequality

Since 2023, the UC Berkeley Stone Center Summer Institute has introduced early-stage PhD students worldwide to frontier research on economic inequality.

During this intensive 4-day program, led by Emmanuel Saez and Gabriel Zucman and administered by Eva Seto, students will attend small-group lectures and seminar presentations from Berkeley faculty and visiting professors addressing fundamental empirical and theoretical questions related to economic inequality. They will also have the opportunity to discuss their own research ideas and work-in-progress with leading researchers in this field.

In July 6-9, 2026, we intend to bring about 20 graduate students from around the world together for a four-day summer institute at the University of California, Berkeley. Applications will open in early 2026.

The program is geared toward PhD students in economics who are at the beginning of their program, but applications are accepted from doctoral candidates of all levels. Travel, accommodations, and meals will be covered for all accepted applicants. Upon admission, more details will be provided.

The Summer Institute was an incredible experience that broadened my research horizons and helped me build lasting connections with both peers and leading scholars in the field of inequality.
