The L&S First-Year Pathways program is now in its third year, and as some alumni from the first two iterations of the program have continued on their journeys in the College, they have identified key support areas that they believe would benefit the first-year student partipants in their academic and eventually professional futures beyond the program. In the profiles that follow, the L&S First-Year Pathways Alumni Team share about themselves, their experiences in the College of Letters & Science, and their aspirations for supporting students in the Pathways program.
Athena Lan Anh Brooke Bernheim
L&S Pathways 2024: Technology & Society cluster
Major: L&S Undeclared (she/her)
What inspires you to continue investing in L&S First-Year Pathways as an alum of the program?
I would like to continue investing in the L&S First-Year Pathways program because I would like to do my part to contribute to the longevity of the program. I think the program helps to reduce the potentially overwhelming experience of attending a large university for the first time, which is something I really appreciate.
What was the highlight of your experience as an L&S First-Year Pathways student?
The highlight of my experience as an L&S Pathways student was talking about some of my favorite science fiction works with my American Studies professor in office hours.
What are you majoring in or planning to major in? How did L&S Pathways help set you on that path?
I am currently undeclared. L&S Pathways set me on this path by exposing me to a variety of different subjects, making it rather difficult to choose. The majors I am looking at currently reflect the interdisciplinary nature of the L&S Pathways program.
What do you hope future L&S Pathways students take away from the program and your support as an alumni?
I hope that future L&S Pathways students are able to use the skills that often come with small class sizes (i.e., advocacy or connection) in their future endeavors. I know that without initial exposure to academics through the L&S Pathways program, I would be reluctant to do things like engage with my peers or attend class office hours.
What’s your favorite spot to study on campus?
The dirt clearing by Strawberry Creek next to Eucalyptus Grove.
What’s your favorite class you’ve taken in L&S so far?
SASIAN 100B: Introduction to Medieval and Modern South Asia with Professor Munis Faruqui and GSI Pronoy Chakraborty.
What’s a book, movie, or TV show you enjoyed recently and would recommend?
Stories of Your Life and Others by Ted Chiang or Bravo’s Real Housewives of Salt Lake City.

L&S Pathways 2023: California from the Field cluster
Majors: English & Cognitive Science (she/her)
What was the highlight of your experience as an L&S First-Year Pathways student?
The overnight camping trips with Professor Paul Fine and Professor Seth Finnegan were easily the highlight of my time in Pathways. Every other weekend, our cluster drove out to field stations across NorCal, and it felt like the perfect mix of adventure and learning. We’d spend the days exploring landscapes I’d never seen before and the nights cooking, stargazing, and asking our professors every kind of question imaginable. Those road trips felt surprisingly personal — we sang songs in the car, shared meals, and just talked for hours. As a freshman and an international student, it was such a welcoming, grounding experience and honestly the best introduction to Berkeley I could’ve asked for.
What are you majoring in or planning to major in? How did L&S Pathways help set you on that path?
I’m double-majoring in English and Cognitive Science, but my Pathways cluster was called California in the Field and was totally different — it combined anthropology, biology, and geography. Even though it didn’t directly point me to my majors, it gave me space to explore areas I wouldn’t have taken otherwise. The geography course especially shifted how I think about the subject — it showed me how human problems and choices actively shape geography, which was mind-opening. The biology class also reminded me how much I enjoy bio, and the combination of all three fields made the experience feel really holistic. I think Pathways didn’t so much decide my majors for me as it did remind me of how broad and interconnected learning at Berkeley can be, which still shapes how I approach my studies.
What inspires you to continue investing in Pathways as an alum of the program?
I know how overwhelming and even lonely Berkeley can feel at first, and Pathways was one of the few things that made me feel grounded. It gave me reassurance, resources, and community during a really chaotic time. Now, as an alum, I want to help future students feel that same support and sense of belonging. It feels meaningful to pass on the encouragement I received, so others don’t feel as lost as I sometimes did.
What do you hope future Pathways students take away from the program and your support as an alumni?
I hope they take away the idea that it’s completely okay to not have everything figured out yet. College isn’t about having all the answers from day one — it’s about exploring, questioning, and growing alongside others who are just as unsure. I’d encourage them to use this opportunity to explore as much as they can and honestly just relax, because it’s so easy to slip into the frantic, competitive mindset that can come with being surrounded by ambitious students. Let yourself slow down, try classes or experiences that simply interest you, and trust that the Pathways community will be a consistent support system as you carve out your own journey!
What’s your favorite spot to study on campus?
I love the Morrison Library! It’s quiet, cozy, and feels tucked away from the usual chaos of campus. I also like studying on Memorial Glade when the weather’s nice — there’s something calming about being surrounded by open space and students sprawled out with books and laptops.
What’s your favorite class you’ve taken in L&S so far?
That’s such a tough question because I’ve loved a few for very different reasons. English 90 with Professor Jesse Nathan was one of my absolute favorites — he brought such life and depth to the material, and it made me fall even more in love with poetry. I’m also really enjoying Professor Geoffrey O’Brien’s poetry workshop class, because it gives me the chance to experiment with my own writing in a supportive environment. Some more: Geography 50AC with Professor Seth Lunine, Astronomy C10 with Professor Alex Filippenko, and of course, Integrative Biology 82 with Professor Paul Fine and Professor Seth Finnegan
What’s a book, movie, or TV show you enjoyed recently and would recommend?
Book: The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab. It’s haunting and beautifully written, with themes of memory, identity, and longing that stuck with me.
Movie: I recently watched Bob Trevino Likes It on a flight and genuinely bawled the entire time. It’s tender, raw, and moving in a way that resonates so deeply.
TV show: I finished watching Monk recently — I love quirky detective shows in general, and Monk hits such a perfect balance of mystery, humor, and heart. Overall, Psych is my favorite in that genre though, would 100% recommend!
What’s your favorite place, restaurant or cafe near campus?
Imm Thai and Curry Pizza House are my top picks. Imm Thai is my go-to for lunch or dinner with friends — their flavors are always fire and they have a long waiting time for a reason! Curry Pizza House is fun and different; it’s such a creative twist on two comfort foods, and it’s my favourite place to order-in from.
Asha Roshini Gupta
L&S Pathways 2024: Technology & Society cluster
Majors: Economics & Media Studies with a Law & Policy Concentration (she/her)
What was the highlight of your experience as an L&S First-Year Pathways student?
I enjoyed meeting a group of curious, thoughtful, and insightful people with backgrounds completely different to my own. I was able to work with them in close settings and have an easier transition into Berkeley in smaller class settings with professors and the same cluster of students.
What are you majoring in or planning to major in? How did L&S Pathways help set you on that path?
I am majoring in Economics and Media Studies with a Law & Policy Concentration. Pathways helped me to narrow down my interests in business to entertainment business by giving me time to pursue it and learn about tech industries, also reaffirming my suspicion that I was interested in ethics and policy.
What inspires you to continue investing in Pathways as an alum of the program?
I want to make this program fit to different people who are interested in it for their own unique reasons. I want to expand the program and make it a beneficial experience where students can figure out whether their interests academically align with their cluster. I also want to create more community within the entire program and make the courses more connected.
What do you hope future Pathways students take away from the program and your support as an alumni?
I hope future students take advantage of their close proximity to their peers with similar interests and to their professors. I hope that they are comfortable in sharing their experiences and are encouraged to explore their academic interests with a newfound openmindedness.
What’s your favorite spot to study on campus?
I like the music library!

I really am enjoying Engin183A, a course on the SCET Certificate pre-req that surrounds business disrupters.

L&S Pathways 2023: California from the Field cluster
Majors: Cognitive Science & Minor in Geography
What was the highlight of your experience as an L&S First-Year Pathways student?
The highlight for me was having a consistent group of people in all of my classes. We studied together and I am still very good friends with some of them.
What are you majoring in or planning to major in? How did L&S Pathways help set you on that path?
I am majoring in Cognitive Science and minoring in geography. Taking a variety of classes in pathways helped me discover what I did and didn’t like. My favorite class ever is Geog 181 and I wouldn’t have been able to discover it without Pathways putting me in Geog 50AC.
What inspires you to continue investing in Pathways as an alum of the program?
As a first-generation college student, I think this program really helped ease the transition from high school. College, especially at Berkeley, can be so overwhelming, so not having to worry about how to get classes and figure out who I could study with was such a blessing in the first semester. I think this program offers numerous great opportunities, such as the ability to do fieldwork without prior experience or being introduced to professors before classes begin, which is rare.
What do you hope future Pathways students take away from the program and your support as an alumni?
I hope that the Pathway students can discover who they are and what their interests are through the support of the program. I hope they take away good relationships, whether that’s with the other students or professors. I want to use what I have learned during my experience at Cal to advise others.
What’s your favorite spot to study on campus?
I love to study in classic Doe.
What’s your favorite class you’ve taken in L&S so far?
Geog 181, Urban Field Study, with Seth Lunine!!!
What’s a book, movie, or TV show you enjoyed recently and would recommend?
The Chosen, every episode makes me cry.
What’s your favorite place, restaurant or cafe near campus?
I love to study at Souvenir and walk around Elmwood!

L&S Pathways 2023: Technology & Society cluster
Economics & Minor in Politics, Philosophy, and Law (she/her)
What was the highlight of your experience as an L&S First-Year Pathways student?
The evening our cluster watched Oppenheimer in Elmwood, we had dinner with our professor and walked back to our dorms. It was the beginning of those uniquely collegiate evenings, when community began to feel real with flourishing relationships.
What are you majoring in or planning to major in? How did L&S Pathways help set you on that path?
I’m studying Economics with Politics, Philosophy, and Law (PPL). The Technology and Society cluster introduced me to the field of AI Safety and Governance, as well as Science and Technology Studies, inspiring me to pursue a career in Tech Law.
What inspires you to continue investing in L&S First-Year Pathways as an alum of the program?
The L&S Pathways program not only reshaped how I learn, but also inspired how I want to support other students. My professors and peers empowered me to share ideas with confidence, embrace constructive feedback, and value diverse perspectives. However, as part of the first cohort, my friends and I noticed areas for improvement: more cross-cluster engagement, integration of core classes, and clearer guidance in preparing for the Spring semester. Unlike other programs at Cal, we also didn’t have upperclassmen to turn to for advice about navigating beyond the Pathways.
As much as I grew from the program, getting to support new students feels like an extension of the Pathways experience. I carry the sense of belonging my cluster gave me into my career path and hope to help other students explore their way as well.
What do you hope future Pathways students take away from the program and your support as an alumni?
Just as an abundance of advisors have helped me navigate my path, I hope students can learn to find the resources they need at Cal and beyond through the colleagues, staff, and alumni they’ve met in the program.
What’s your favorite spot to study on campus?
I enjoy studying at wooden desks, so the Kresge Engineering & Mathematical Sciences Library and The Environmental Design Library!
What’s your favorite class you’ve taken in L&S so far?
Data and Justice (DATA C4AC) with Mauricio Najarro was an incredibly informative class about Science and Technology Studies (STS). I learned to approach data injustice by asking better questions instead of rushing to technical fixes.
What’s a book, movie, or TV show you enjoyed recently and would recommend?
My favorite reads of this season are Stay True by Hua Hsu, The Candy House by Jennifer Egan, and How to Know a Person by David Brooks.
What’s your favorite place, restaurant or cafe near campus?
Caffè Strada, for its beautiful pear trees and banana pecan muffins.
Riddhi Nanda Kumar
L&S Pathways 2024-25: Pre-Med: Race, Immigration & Public Health cluster
Majors: Molecular Cell Biology & Public Health (she/her)
What was the highlight of your experience as an L&S First-Year Pathways student?
We once spent the evening over dinner on the patio of Gather, talking for hours about how we’ve been and what was coming next in our lives. It was the end of our freshman year, and I was strangely sentimental as the sun set around us. It felt as though something good was coming to an end, or maybe just beginning.
Earlier that day, with a friend from my cluster, I had gone to pick up flowers and a card for our ethnic studies professor, who had put this event together. Of course, we ran into her at the bus stop on our way back. We were a giggling mess, trying to duck out of sight even though there was no way she couldn’t have seen us. Later, we passed our card around the table, trying to collect signatures as discreetly as possible. It was all loads of fun. I had a feeling then that these friendships and these memories would last me a lifetime.
What are you majoring in or planning to major in? How did Pathways help set you on that path?
I joined Berkeley as an intended Molecular Cell Biology major. Taking classes in the “Race, Immigration, and Public Health” cluster sparked my interest in also pursuing a degree in Public Health. I’ve found that I really enjoy studying the humanities and the social sciences in conjunction with my other STEM-heavy coursework.
What inspires you to continue investing in L&S Pathways as an alum of the program?
Berkeley is a large university with a lot to offer. I understand that it can be easy to get lost in the crowd sometimes. Joining the Pathways program truly helped me build community and find my footing in college. I want to give back and serve as a resource for the new freshmen who are trying to put their best foot forward this year, in this important time of their lives.
What do you hope future Pathways students take away from the program and your support as an alumni?
I hope that the Pathways students feel that they are not alone in this new atmosphere or in the process of getting their degree. I hope that the program gives them the courage and the confidence to put themselves out there, to explore and be inspired.
What’s your favorite spot to study on campus?
I love studying at the library in the Valley Life Sciences Building!
What’s your favorite class you’ve taken in L&S so far?
Studying literature and learning about different languages are some of my favorite things to do, so I really enjoyed taking the class Lament and the Beloved: Classical Arabic Poets on Love, Loss, and Belonging.
What’s a book, movie, or TV show you enjoyed recently and would recommend?
I just recently finished reading Stay True, a memoir by Hua Hsu, telling the story of his undergrad experience at Berkeley in the mid-90s.
The last show I watched (and this is a little silly) was Just Add Magic with my younger brother. It’s just a really comforting show that reminds me of my childhood.
What’s your favorite place, restaurant or cafe near campus?
I love to treat myself at Yogurt Park on the way back from a late midterm.
Lesley Alondra Martinez
L&S Pathways 2023: Neuroscience, Philosophy & Society cluster
Major: Psychology & Minor in Education (she/they)
What was the highlight of your experience as an L&S First-Year Pathways student?
The highlight of my experience as an L&S First-Year Pathways student was the connections it brought me with both my classmates and my professors. I would study with my classmates, make meetings with them after class, talk to my professors after class and visit their lab, and learn more about the Berkeley environment while talking to others. It was an amazing experience.
What are you majoring in or planning to major in? How did L&S Pathways help set you on that path?
I am majoring in Psychology and minoring in Education. Pathways helped me fulfill some Breadth requirements allowing me to focus on major requirements after the experience but also opened up my interests. I gained a heightened interest in policy and other countries from my Nordic studies which I wouldn't have gained had I not participated in the Pathways program.
What inspires you to continue investing in L&S Pathways as an alum of the program?
I think that my Pathways experience is one I'm very grateful for but to be able to improve it and have future Pathways students have even better experiences is what I want to strive for. I want the Pathways program to keep growing and evolving and I want to support it and the students through all the changes.
What do you hope future L&S Pathways students take away from the program and your support as an alumni?
I hope students are able to make great connections with their peers and professors and learn something new about themselves. College is the time to explore, learn, and build a new community, and I think if they take all of that away from the Pathways program, its a success.
What’s your favorite spot to study on campus?
I love studying at the resource centers at Hearst Field Annex such as the LSRC and the QARC. They always have snacks and relaxing activities to do in between study sessions.
What’s your favorite class you’ve taken in L&S so far?
My favorite class that I've taken in L&S so far was Psych 101. I was really scared because we were going to use a coding application but they really walked you through everything and had me doing a lot of hands-on work in class. We got to conduct our own small scale research and make graphs and linear models out of it and it felt like I had found my calling.
What’s a book, movie, or TV show you enjoyed recently and would recommend?
I'm a big rom com person so while doing an assignment last week I was watching The Fault in Our Stars for the first time. It was such a beautiful and sad movie to me but I love those kinds of movies.
What’s your favorite place, restaurant or cafe near campus?
My favorite place on campus has to be either Wrap n Roll or Yali's cafe. Wrap n Roll has such good chicken and mango lassi and Yali's Cafe has really good smoothies.

L&S Pathways Fall 2024: California: Ecology & Society cluster
Major: Intended Enviromental Science (he/him)
What was the highlight of your experience as an L&S First-Year Pathways student?
The community. The smaller cohorts ensured that I always knew people in my classes, and socially. It helped smooth the transition period when entering college, especially at such a big place like Berkeley.
What are you majoring in or planning to major in? How did L&S Pathways help set you on that path?
I’m planning to major in Environmental Science. Pathways directly set me down this path. I never thought that I would be interested in studying environmental systems and biology, but I fell in love with it during my Pathways experience. I met some amazing professors who inspired me to take more ecology-oriented courses. I thought it would just be a fun, unique first semester, and it ended up setting me on a passionate path.
What inspires you to continue investing in L&S Pathways as an alum of the program?
I came from a small high school, so transitioning to Berkeley was scary. This Pathways program helped my transition and that motivated me to stay involved so that more Freshman get the opportunity to take a program like this.
What do you hope future L&S Pathways students take away from the program and your support as an alumni?
I hope that future pathways students can take away a network of friends and mentors, as well as the confidence to take on Berkeley.
What’s your favorite spot to study on campus?
Putting my hammock up by the Campanile (weather permitting), Morrison Library or Heyns reading room in Doe Library.
What’s your favorite class you’ve taken in L&S so far?
