Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

Diversity lies at the heart of the Social Sciences at Berkeley. Studying societies around the world, including a broad range of identities, behaviors, values, and policies, compels us to recognize and engage with the diversity of the human experience.

By ensuring that our engagement with diversity is pursued in an equitable and inclusive manner, the Social Sciences Division empowers Berkeley scholars to attain the highest standards of research excellence and contribute to the advancement of knowledge.

The Social Sciences at Berkeley are thriving precisely because, as a public university, we bring together faculty, students, and staff who represent the rich diversity of California, the United States, and the world. Not only is our division the most diverse on campus by any measure, but our members are committed to upholding the university’s principles of community so that every individual can be successful in a healthy, welcoming, and safe environment.

In this spirit, our division continues to work toward expanding opportunities for students from historically underrepresented groups, first-generation students, women, and veterans, among others, to help them achieve their academic and professional goals.
