More than 108,000 students seek admission to UC Berkeley for 2018-19

UC Berkeley has received more than 89,000 applications from high school students seeking admission to the 2018-19 freshman class, and an additional 19,000 from students seeking admission as transfer students. The numbers set yet another record year in freshman applications submitted.

OWLs provide welcome nest for re-entry students

UC Berkeley undergraduates Kelly Richeson and Gina Niceforo are proud to be Bears. But the 56-year-old retired Ventura County firefighter and the 37-year-old former South Lake Tahoe waitress are equally glad to be OWLs. They’re members of Older Wiser Learners (OWLs), a support group on campus that’s gaining popularity with Berkeley’s 1,660-plus undergraduate re-entry students, who are defined as age 25 and older and having had at least a five-year absence from college.

Universities rush to add data science majors as demand explodes

In spring 2016, UC Berkeley’s first Foundations of Data Science course attracted around 300 students. This semester, nearly 1,000 have enrolled — and university officials are working to create a data science undergraduate major, the first new major for the College of Letters & Science in at least 16 years.

Campus offers admission to more than 15,000 students

University of California, Berkeley officials have offered freshman admission to more than 15,500 high school students for the 2017-18 school year. And more offers were made to first-generation college students and underrepresented minority students than in 2016-17.
