Transfer Credit

General Guidelines

In many cases, it is possible to satisfy unit or course curriculum requirements with course work from other campuses. Be sure to check with the office responsible for the requirement to seek transfer credit approval before enrolling elsewhere. Additional general information on transfer credit is available on the Office of the Registrar website.

You are responsible for reviewing enrollment policies and ensuring the accuracy of your enrollments.  Review this page and the Berkeley Guide Academic Policies.  Your instructors, academic advisers, and the Office of the Registrar cannot enroll on your behalf.

Transfer Student FAQs

What is the College of Letters & Science?
The College of Letters & Science (L&S) is UC Berkeley’s liberal arts college and is the largest of the university’s schools and colleges. It is also known as "the College".  L&S offers over 80 majors in Arts & Humanities, Biological Science, Physical Science, Social Science, and Interdisciplinary Studies. Earning a degree in the liberal arts provides you with a rich and varied educational experience and allows you to explore fields of knowledge beyond your major.

Change of College into L&S

Interested in a change of college to Letters & Science?  Please attend a workshop if you have questions. Plan to arrive on time for the workshops as there is no late admittance. The workshop schedule can be found on the advising calendar. Upcoming workshops are listed in the table below.

Note: Advising appointments are no longer required prior to submitting your Change of College petition.

To resume your studies in the College of Letters & Science (L&S) after withdrawing or after being absent for one or more semesters, you must submit an Application for Readmission. The College does not allow students to earn a second Bachelor's degree.

Note: The readmission deadline for Fall 2018 is June 1, 2018.  Students can mail their applications if they’re out of the area, and we will accept the June 1 postmark on the envelope.

Students who do not meet the terms of academic probation may be dismissed from the College. This is not necessarily the end of a student's academic career at UC Berkeley. Many strong students have been dismissed and have been able to return and graduate from Berkeley. In order to resume studies at Berkeley, students will need to be readmitted by the Deans' Conference.

Course Load Limits

In general, a standard course load is 15 units of course work per semester. L&S requires all students to take 13 units minimum each semester, except in cases where the dean has approved a course load with fewer units.  Be aware of Deadlines Dates for Class Schedule Changes that apply only to regular fall and spring semesters.
