On March 23, 1868, the University of California was born at Berkeley. Exactly 150 years later, university and campus leaders, students, staff, faculty, alumni and guests came together to celebrate the UC’s — and Berkeley’s — illustrious past and march proudly into its future.

Chancellor Christ sworn in as 600 graduate during winter ceremony

When Carol Christ’s staff asked her how she wanted to be sworn in as UC Berkeley’s 11th chancellor, she immediately knew the answer: with 600 new graduates and their families.

Christ, who is the first woman to lead the university in its 149-year history, was formally inaugurated on Sunday, just minutes before presenting Ph.D., master’s and bachelor’s degrees to the winter graduating class.

More than 108,000 students seek admission to UC Berkeley for 2018-19

UC Berkeley has received more than 89,000 applications from high school students seeking admission to the 2018-19 freshman class, and an additional 19,000 from students seeking admission as transfer students. The numbers set yet another record year in freshman applications submitted.

New eight-day Golden Bear Orientation starts Tuesday

Two years in the making, an ambitious program to introduce all 9,500 incoming students to UC Berkeley launches next Tuesday, Aug. 15. Golden Bear Orientation — eight jam-packed days of training sessions, ice breakers, tours and academic programming — is expected to be the largest orientation of its kind at a U.S. university, in terms of the number of students participating.

Give me a C! New students break world record

To Angela Neally from Long Beach and Dani Goland from Israel, the letter C they were forming on the football field Tuesday night with some 7,000 other new students might have stood for “Ccccccold!” Temperatures dipped and fog swirled around California Memorial Stadium, unlike the warm summer evenings many knew back home. But at about 9:15 p.m., as it finally took shape, there was no doubt what the big C meant to all the incoming UC Berkeley students who created it.
