Sonya Scott

College Adviser

Joined the L&S Office of Undergraduate Advising in:
1999

What is your approach to advising?
I approach each advising moment as a teachable moment.

Education:
MA, Career Development, John F. Kennedy University School of Management
BS, Business Administration, University of Southern California

How did you get here?
I've been working in higher education since 1990, as an Admission Counselor, Student Activities Coordinator, and Adviser at local colleges and universities.

What's your favorite part of your job?
Helping students figure out the "puzzles" that allow them to fulfill all of their desires while also fulfilling the college's requirements.

About me:
I'm an Oakland native! When I'm not advising, I spend my free time knitting, reading, traveling with my family, and working with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. activities.

What advice do you have for L&S students in general?
I attained my first jobs after college graduation due to my work-related skills gained outside of the classroom. Through internships and being a student leader, I learned how to put the theories learned as an undergraduate into real-life situations.
