Effective Fall 2027, all transfer students are admitted directly into the major selected on their application. For transfer students admitted prior to Fall 2027 who are admitted to L&S as "undeclared," how do I declare my major after I arrive?

Effective Fall 2027, all transfer students admitted to the college will be directly admitted to a major. Follow the guidance on assist.org to ensure you are eligible for direct admission into a major. Prior to Fall 2027, some transfer students were admitted to the College of Letters and Science as undeclared (i.e., not directly admitted into one of the majors participating in the direct admission pilot program). Undeclared transfer students must complete all major declaration requirements and apply for the major they wish to declare. The process to declare a major is different for each L&S major.

Once you arrive on campus, you will work with your Undergraduate Major Adviser (UMA) to learn about the process to declare your major.

For the 2023-24, 2024-25, and 2025-26 academic years, L&S is piloting a program that will offer direct admission into certain majors. If you select one of the majors in the pilot program on your UC Berkeley admissions application, and are offered admission to L&S, you will be directly admitted into the major. These students will not have to go through an additional internal process to apply or officially declare their major because they will have already been admitted (or declared) into their major. Visit the L&S Direct Admission to Major Transfer Pilot website to learn more about this program.
