General Information

Every L&S student is assigned an Expected Graduation Term (EGT) at the point of first-time enrollment at Berkeley. For freshmen, the EGT is assigned at the projected 8th semester of enrollment, for transfers at the 4th semester. You can confirm your EGT in the 'Term Information' section (below your photo) on My Academics in CalCentral

Once enrollment appointments are announced for your EGT, your status will be updated on My Academics to indicate that your EGT will be the final term to complete all degree requirements. 

Read on to find out more about planning for your EGT, as well as information on obtaining early proof of graduation, ordering official transcripts and diplomas, and participating in commencement ceremonies. 

If you have an EGT for the 2017-2018 academic year (i.e. fall 2017, spring 2018, or summer 2018), review important deadline information for the appropriate EGT term posted along the right side of this webpage.

How to Plan Ahead for your EGT

Before you enroll in classes at Berkeley for your EGT semester, it is essential that you check to make sure that classes you have chosen will satisfy any remaining degree requirements.

You should also consider other factors that may require an adjustment to your EGT:

If you are uncertain about the completion of any of your requirements as you enter your final year and EGT Make an appointment with an L&S College Adviser before finalizing your planned schedule. Once enrollment appointments are are announced for your EGT semester, you will be blocked from enrollment at Berkeley for any term beyond your EGT. Therefore it is important to schedule an appointment early on to go over your plan and discuss eligibility for moving your EGT to a later term if that is necessary. Complete a Four Program Plan Worskheet in advance of your appointment (signed by a major adviser if you are declared), and bring it along with any other pertinent documentation (e.g. confirmation of acceptance to UCEAP, documentation from DSP for reduced course load, etc). While your current EGT remains active, you will not be able to enroll in future terms beyond your assigned EGT. Please be sure to plan ahead as scheduling an advising appointment in L&S can require several weeks notice. 
If you plan to graduate before your assigned EGT Complete an Expected Graduation Term Change Request form to request your preferred EGT to an earlier term and submit to 206 Evans Hall.
If you are a declared double major and want to move your EGT to graduate in your 9th semester Complete an Expected Graduation Term Change Request form and submit to 206 Evans Hall.
If you plan to graduate in the summer Complete an Expected Graduation Term Change Request form and submit to 206 Evans Hall.
If you plan to enroll elsewhere for your EGT semester  To complete your final requirements at another institution with transfer credit, you must notify the L&S Office of Undergraduate Advising of your plan to finish final requirements away from Berkeley and request your final term (EGT) for graduation by the posted deadline for the term you wish to graduate. Send your notification to lsdegreelist@berkeley.edu, include your name, ID and the requested EGT term. Review the deadlines posted to the right (if you plan to graduate in 2017-2018) for requesting an EGT and submitting transcripts from your transfer institution.
If you cancel registration or withdraw from your EGT semester (or summer term)

If you still plan to graduate by your assigned EGT term, you must notify the L&S Office of Undergraduate Advising in order to confirm your intention to graduate even though you are canceling or withdrawing for your final term, otherwise you will not be reviewed and cleared for graduation. Send your notification to lsdegreelist@berkeley.edu, include your name, ID and confirm your assigned EGT. 

If you do not plan to graduate by your assigned EGT, when you are ready to resume your studies, either at Berkeley or another institution, contact the L&S Office of Undergraduate Advising to identify and plan for a new EGT. 

If you've been away from Berkeley and don't have a current EGT, or your assigned EGT has past

Contact the L&S Office of Undergraduate Advising and your Undergraduate Major Adviser to go over a plan to complete your requirements and determine a new EGT.

If you plan to attend UCEAP for your EGT semester

If you plan to attend UCEAP for your final semeser or summer, your EGT must be coordinatined with the completion of the UCEAP program so that courses and grades are posted to your record in time to review and clear you for graduation. 

  • If your Fall UCEAP program ends by December 31, you should have a Fall semester EGT.
  • If your Fall UCB program ends after December 31you should have a Spring semester EGT.
  • If your Spring UCEAP program ends by May 31you should have a Spring semester EGT.
  • If your Spring UCEAP program ends after May 31you should have a Summer term EGT.
  • If your plan to enroll in Summer UCEAP, you should have a Summer term EGT.

You may need to meet with an L&S adviser to determine your eligibilty for moving an EGT to a later semester/term.

Early Proof of Graduation/Degree Completion

If a prospective employer or graduate school requires proof that you have completed your degree requirements, before degrees are officially conferred by the Academic Senate you may petition for either a Certificate of Completion, or Expedited Degree. These requests are submitted at Cal Student Central, and can only be processed four weeks after the end of the graduating term.

Proof of Intent to Graduate

If you are in your graduating term and your prospective employer or graduate school needs proof you have either 1) completed your degree requirements or 2) will complete your degree with "in progress" coursework before the end of your graduating term, you can request a Proof of Intent to Graduate letter.

A College Adviser can only provide your "Intent to Graduate" letter in an appointment and will not be able to get you the letter without the items listed below. Be sure to have the items in hand before the appointment. 

  • Proof of current enrollment in the final requirements.
  • A major completion statement from your Major Advisor(s).
  • Complete mailing address of the requestor (if applicable).

Official Transcripts and Diplomas

An official transcript reflecting your degree is normally available 6 to 8 weeks after posting of final grades.  Diplomas are mailed about four months after the end of your graduating term.  You can verify your diploma mailing address is accurate by logging on to CalCentral and updating your Profile (under Community) or through the Office of the Registrar.

Commencement Ceremonies

Commencement ceremonies are conducted in the months of May and December.

Participation in commencement ceremonies does not mean that you have officially graduated. In many cases, major departments allow students with some outstanding requirements to participate in commencement. If you have not finished all of your requirements but wish to participate in a ceremony, you must check with your undergraduate major adviser 2-3 months in advance about eligibility, deadlines and tickets.

Friday, October 12 (Late appeals are not considered. Any requests after the deadline will be processed for Spring 2019.)
