Upper Division Major Requirements

Go to current course offerings for Fall 2006

Lower Division Upper Division ES 196A, 196B, and 196L Upper division elective course lists

The upper division ES courses blend core requirements with a great deal of flexibility, allowing students to tailor their coursework to their own research interests. Just as in the lower division, upper division coursework is interdisciplinary. Students cap off their coursework and explore a research interest of their choice in ES 196A, 196B, and 196L, a yearlong senior research project.

Scheduling
Students must take their upper division statistics course prior to enrolling in ES 100. ES 100, which is only taught in spring semesters, must be completed before students enroll in ES 196A. In turn, ES 196A is a prerequisite to ES 196B. This creates a chain of four classes beginning in fall of the junior year. Students who plan to study abroad or otherwise not continuously enroll at Berkeley for their junior and senior years should talk to the ES adviser about planning options.

All ES students must complete the following Upper Division Requirements.

Elective in the Area of Emphasis One 3 or 4 unit upper division course in the student's area of emphasis to be selected from the upper division electives list. Look for courses marked with B for biological sciences, S for social sciences, or P for physical sciences, depending on your area of emphasis. Some of the elective courses have prerequisites. It is your responsibility to check if you have fulfilled them, before enrolling in the course.
Senior Research Seminar ES 196A and 196B, Senior Research Seminar in Environmental Sciences (3 units fall, 3 units spring)
ES196L, Senior Research Laboratory in Environmental Sciences (1 unit fall, 1 unit spring)
The Senior Research Seminar totals 8 units.

Prerequisites: Upper Division Statistics requirement and ES 100.
The Senior Research Seminar is taken during the student's final year.
Students must take 196L concurrently with 196A & 196B.

Additional Electives All students are required to have 30 upper division units in the major. If the above courses do not total 30 units, students must fulfill the 30 unit requirement with any additional courses from of the upper division electives list (not restricted to your area of emphasis).
