Dean Robert C. Holub Appointed Provost and VC at University of Tennessee
by former EVCP Paul R. Gray
January 25, 2007
I write to report that our colleague, Bob Holub, has accepted the position of Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs for the University of Tennessee. Berkeley's loss is Tennessee's gain, as faculty, staff, and students will benefit from his vision and leadership, and his wealth of knowledge.
As Dean of the Undergraduate Division in the College of Letters and Science, Bob was extraordinarily committed to nurturing rich intellectual relationships between faculty members and students. That commitment, for example, led to the development of L&S Discovery Courses, which are taught by distinguished teachers on topics designed to add genuine breadth to undergraduate education.
Bob began teaching at Berkeley in 1979 in the German Department, and was promoted to Full Professor in 1989. Before becoming Dean of the L&S Undergraduate Division, he served on many important campus committees. He also chaired his fair share, including the Humanities Area Council, the Committee on Educational Policy, and the Committee on Budget and Interdepartmental Relations.
Those of us who worked with him regularly will miss his insight and wonderful sense of humor. Please join me in congratulating Bob on his appointment and in wishing him well in his new venture.
