New Capped Majors: Public Health and Operations Research and Management Science

January 25, 2007

Public Health and ORMS have joined the list of capped majors that also includes:

  • Computer Science
  • Economics
  • Mass Communications
  • Psychology
  • Social Welfare

The unit cap applies to freshmen admitted to UCB Fall 2004 or later and for transfer students admitted Fall 2006 or later. Students must apply for these majors when, including work in progress, they have reached less than or equal to 80 total units. This total excludes high school enrichment units (e.g., Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, or other college units earned prior to high school graduation).

With the exception of junior transfers, the cap applies to all students (including double majors, simultaneous degrees, and students appealing for change of college into L&S).

Junior transfers have one semester--their first on the Berkeley campus--to apply for a capped major.

See the L&S Office of Undergraduate Advising website for additional information: http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/choosingmajor/definition.html#caps.

Please share this information broadly with students and with your colleagues. Any questions regarding this policy may be addressed to Lourdes Miranda, Director of Student Policy, at 510-642-9432 or lourdesm@berkeley.edu.
