Planning Ahead for the Major

You should plan to declare your major before you complete 70 units. This will leave you with at least 3 semesters to finish your major--ample time for the 30-36 units it will take to complete major requirements. This should be easy if you plan ahead.

Some TELEBEARS FACTS to take into consideration in your planning:

  • Telebears understands only your total units, not your terms on campus. If you have 0-29 units you are a freshman; 30-59 units makes you a sophomore; 60-89 units makes you a junior. For the purposes of enrolling in courses, TeleBears always adds in your AP (Advanced Placement) units.
  • When you are enrolling for an upcoming semester, TeleBears also adds in the units you currently have in progress.
  • Media Studies 10 should be taken in the Fall term that you have sophomore status. It can be difficult for juniors to get this course. Seniors are never admitted. This course is not offered in the Spring.
  • If you are a junior and you still need Media Studies 10, you should consider enrolling in UCB summer session (UCLA and UCSD also offer acceptable equivalents). Very few community colleges offer an acceptable course.
  • Political Science 1 and History 7B are set up to admit freshmen and sophomores.
  • Political Science 1, Sociology 1 or 3, Anthropology 3, and Economics 1 are usually offered every semester; most are also offered in UCB summer session. Check with those departments.
  • Each of the history prerequisites is offered only once per year (History 7B is usually offered in the Spring semester). Some may be offered in UCB summer session.
  • The Media Studies major does not control the scheduling for prerequisites other than MS10, so prerequisites can occasionally be offered at conflicting times. Do not expect to complete all prereqs in a single semester.

REMEMBER:

Media Studies 10 is a PRE-requisite to the core courses, Media Studies 101, 102, and 104. You may not be enrolled in Media Studies 10 and any other core course at the same time. If you "crash" your way into 101, 102, or 104, you may not be permitted to subsequently enroll in Media Studies 10.
