To graduate in Media Studies from Berkeley, you need to fulfill three sets of requirements: (1) those of the University of California (and Berkeley campus); (2) of the College of Letters and Science, and (3) those of the major. Although final responsibility for learning and completing requirements rests with you, three kinds of academic assistance are available to help you understand these requirements:
1. College Advising: Talk to the L&S advisors in 113 Campbell Hall to determine how to fulfill University and College Requirements (American History, Institutions, Breadth, Quantitative Reasoning, etc), residency requirements and overall unit requirements. You should pick up a copy of the L&S publication "Earning Your Degree," a guide to degree requirements, procedures, and regulations for the College of Letters and Science. The approval of an L&S Advisor is required for reduced study lists (less than 13 units).
2. Student Affairs Officer: Marty Gaetjens, the Student Affairs Officer, should be your first contact for general information about the major and the application process. He is the person to see regarding application and declaration of the major, and the fulfillment of major requirements for graduation. He coordinates all the courses offered directly by the Media Studies program; he can advise you on the scheduling and availability of our courses, and help you with many problems regarding final grades and incompletes.
All majors are required to come in once a semester to review academic plans and progress in the major. Plan to meet with the Student Affairs Officer for 15 minutes well before your TeleBEARS appointment time. The Student Affairs Officer also coordinates our graduation ceremonies each Spring. His office hours are Monday through Friday 9-12pm & 1:30-5pm, room 343 Campbell Hall. His phone number is 642-2363.
TIP: Many advising problems arise because students fail to check on their official enrollments and their final grades. Remember to check your current study list via Info Bears (642-9400). You may also use Info Bears to check your grades for the most recent semester.
The longer you wait to fix errors on your study list or transcript, the more difficult and time-consuming they become. Keep on top of your grades and enrollments.
3. Major Advising: Jean Retzinger & Marina Levina are the faculty members who serves as Major Advisor. The Student Affairs Officer may refer you to them for approval of transfer coursework, appeals applications, or other exceptional decisions that need to be made. Marina Levina is also the honors officer for the Media Studies major and teaches the Honors Thesis seminar each Spring. Check the Mass Comm bulletin board for her drop-in office hours.
