Lower Division Historical Requirement Upper Division Areas of Concentration

LOWER DIVISION REQUIREMENTS

A minimum grade of "C" is required in all lower division courses taken for the major. The lower division requirement consists of American Studies 10: Introduction to American Studies (4 units), plus three courses from the following list of courses, with no more than two courses from any one department. (This list is subject to annual review and revision.) NOTE: Appropriate courses taken at other universities can be substituted with adviser approval of the Major Approval form.

Students declaring April 2006 or later need to have completed any two of the four lower division requirements before declaring. (Students are not required to have completed AS 10 before declaring, but are encouraged to complete this requirement as soon as possible after declaring.)

American Studies 10 (or 10AC when offered), Introduction to American Studies

(4 units) American culture and cultural change, with attention to the multicultural basis of American society and emphasis on the need for multiple methods of analysis. The course will consistently draw on the arts, material culture, and various fields affecting cultural production and meaning. Those areas include literature, film, history, architecture, history of art, religion, music, engineering, environmental studies, anthropology, politics, economics, law, and medicine.
