Tele-BEARS is right around the corner!

Do you need an adviser code in order to register?
Tele-BEARS Phase I begins soon so now's a good time to find out! If you are required to obtain an Adviser Code (AC) before using Tele-BEARS, a "YES" will be printed in the "Adviser Code Require" section of your registration form. You will not be able to use Tele-BEARS until you have obtained your AC.
You must meet with your major adviser to obtain your Adviser Code. You should see your adviser well in advance of your Phase I appointment time; check with your department office for information about scheduled advising times. (March 26, 2004)

Having a rough semester?
Many students experience some form of academic difficulty during their college career. For some students, they may simply struggle through a class or two or through a single term. For others, academic difficulty may be more severe and/or long lasting. (March 26, 2004)

The Fall 2003 Survey of New Freshmen
If you really want to know what Berkeley students are like, you ask them. That's what the Office of Student Research does each year, e-mailing every single enrolled undergraduate and asking them to fill out an extensive survey in exchange for the chance to win money and prizes. More than 10,000 of the university's 23,000 students took the bait for the Spring 2003 UC Undergraduate Experience Survey (UCUES), while 2,600 of the 3,600 entering freshmen filled out the Fall 2003 online Survey of New Freshmen. The Nathan and Violet David Scholars Program
A Research Funding Opportunity for Undergraduates in the Sciences at Berkeley. Each year, the Nathan and Violet David Scholars Program gives talented students the opportunity to participate in undergraduate research in the sciences. The application deadline is April 5, 2004. (March 26, 2004)

Anxiety and stress are unavoidable as a student at Cal. However, at times, it can become a problem. Fortunately, CPS offers a variety of services that may be helpful to you. Golden Opportunities for Internships!
Deadlines are coming soon for the following programs: April 5, 2004: David Scholars Program. A total of $17,000 in project expenses and stipends are available for financial aid-eligible students planning to pursue a Ph.D. in the sciences after graduation. Students can apply as sophomores (two years prior to graduation) or juniors (one semester or one year prior to graduation).
April 30, for travel in June, July, August, or September, 2004: Travel Grant for Undergraduate Research (L&S Students). Grants are made to cover the cost of airfare, up to $500, to travel to collect data or to present data at a conference .(March 26, 2004)

BASE Summer Program
BASE Summer Program (Business for Arts, Sciences and Engineering) Applications for BASE are now being accepted. The application deadline is March 31, 2004.
Many undergraduate students in arts, sciences or engineering can benefit from an introduction to the real-world business environment. The BASE Summer Program does this by familiarizing participants with the tools necessary to conduct business research, analyze product and financial markets, examine organizational behavior issues, and effectively manage a career search. UC Berkeley Summer School Enrollment is Underway!
Almost one half of all Berkeley undergrads enrolled in the spring will attend Berkeley Summer Sessions this year. You can take a course that interests you, satisfy a requirement, raise your GPA, maintain your financial aid eligibility by making adequate progress for the preceding academic year, or complete a semester's work by attending for the entire twelve weeks of summer. EAP Spring Mini Fair
If you are thinking about studying abroad, find out more at the UC Education Abroad Program (EAP) Spring Mini Fair. Talk with students who have just returned from their experiences in Australia, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Mexico, New Zealand, South Africa, and Thailand. The EAP Spring Mini Fair will be held on Thursday March 11 from 11AM - 2 PM in Stephens Lounge, MLK Jr. Student Union. The application deadline for spring semester 2005 programs is April 9, 2004. Apply for the UCDC program and become an intern in Washington, DC!
This relatively new academic program provides a unique opportunity for 24-26 undergraduates from ALL MAJORS to spend a semester (Fall or Spring) in Washington, DC pursuing full-time course work and an internship in their selected field. The deadline for the Fall 2004 semester is in late February. Contact the program for the exact deadline. (January 26, 2004)

March 3, 2004: The Haas Scholars Program, for students IN ALL MAJORS AND COLLEGES, provides up to $12,000 for students to carry out a senior thesis or project (eligibility: 3.5+ GPA, financial aid eligibility, Fall 04 or Spring-Summer 05 grad). Applications are now available. 20 of these awards will be given.

March 5, 2004: Center for Race and Gender, for research dealing with issues of race and gender, especially locally.

March 19, 2004: The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship provides a stipend of $2,500 for students to conduct research in preparation for a senior research project or thesis. (Eligibility: L&S students with 3.0+ GPA, Fall 04 or Spring-Summer 05 grads). 90 of these awards will be given.

March 19, 2004: Guidant Bioengineering Undergraduate Research Program. A ten-week sponsored internship program with $3,200 stipend.

March for the summer 2004, and in April for fall of 2004: Biology Fellows Program. $1800 stipend to carry out research in the biological sciences. You organize and participate in a symposium at the end of your one-semester term with the program. (January 26, 2004)

Berkeley Physics Undergraduate Research Scholars Program
The Berkeley Physics Undergraduate Research Scholars Program is designed to encourage Physics majors to engage in research. The Physics Department will award a stipend of $500 per semester to several students involved in research with Physics faculty. The deadline is February 6th. (January 26, 2004)

Get the new semester off to a good start!
The Student Learning Center provides tutoring, study groups and adjunct courses for students. The Student Learning Center is located in the Cesar E. Chavez Student Center on lower Sproul Plaza; hours are Monday - Thursday 8 to 6, Friday 8 to 5.
Throughout the academic year, workshops on study and writing strategies geared towards students across the disciplines and in upper division courses are held in the SLC. The SLC staff offers Adjunct Courses linked to certain lecture courses, Study Strategies Seminar Courses, R&C 1A & 1B Writing workshops linked to certain sections of Reading and Composition, and Student Led Lecture Series Courses. The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship provides up to $7,500 per year for undergraduate educational expenses!
Sophomores and juniors majoring in mathematics, sciences, and engineering who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents in the upper quarter of their class (typically a minimum 3.5 GPA) are eligible to apply.

What can you do with your major? It's up to you! With careful planning, you can develop career-related skills and experiences that can prepare you for almost any job or graduate school field. Based on an annual survey of recent graduates, the Career Center has profiled 66 majors from six of the UC Berkeley colleges.

New Breadth Course Search Engine on Letters & Science Website
For all those looking to complete Letters & Science breadth requirements (which should be anyone even slightly interested in graduation), the search just got a whole lot easier. Like the Polio vaccine, Gutenberg printing press, jet engine, and Spam, the Letters & Science Breadth Course search engine promises to be something that makes us ask, "How did we ever live without this?" The search engine cross-references the Schedule of Classes with the latest L&S Seven Course Breadth list to find courses available that can satisfy specific breadth requirements. You can review lists of all breadth courses offered during the given semester, or narrow your search in a number of ways (for example, specifying days/times you have free for a class). Berkeley Scientific Journal
October 3rd is the deadline for submitting your entry to the BERKELEY SCIENTIFIC JOURNAL -- for undergraduate research in the sciences.
BSJ is an award-winning, undergraduate-run publication. Our past journals have dealt with pertinent issues such as national defense, medical engineering, and energy and the environment. For all you scientific researchers out there, this is your chance to publish your work! The deadlines are as follows:

The application form for the Spring 2004 UC Berkeley Washington Program
The application form for the Spring 2004 UC Berkeley Washington Program is due October 8th and is now available online. Each Fall and Spring, the UCB Washington Program sends undergraduates to Washington, D.C., to complete academic research projects of their own design, and to participate in internships related to their research. The Program is open to juniors and seniors in any major, and graduating seniors may participate during their final semester at UCB (but not after they actually graduate). (September 29, 2003)

Contact us as early as you can on Thursday morning, because appointments fill up very quickly.
Drop-in Appointments:
We offer a limited number of drop-in appointments each day that are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Come to 113 Campbell Hall as close to 9:00 a.m. or 1:00 p.m. as you can for your best chance to see an adviser (you cannot reserve a drop-in appointment by phone).
On-line Advising:

Professor Holub Named Dean of the L&S Undergraduate Division
Professor Robert C. Holub has been appointed as the new dean of the L&S Undergraudate Division, effective July 1. Professor Holub joined the UCB German department in 1979 and is an individual of "immense energy, capabilities, and effectiveness," according to Jan de Vries, Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and Faculty Welfare. "With extensive experience in both the administration and on Senate committees," stated de Vries, Holub "commands remarkably detailed knowledge of the workings of both campus and College." Professor Holub's experience includes membership in the L&S Executive Committee, which is primarily focused on undergraduate education in L&S. Please join us in welcoming Professor Holub. Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship program (SURF)
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship program (SURF) is designed to allow Berkeley undergraduates in the College of Letters and Science to spend the summer doing concentrated research in preparation for a senior thesis or another major capstone research project. Fellows will receive a $2000 summer stipend, which is intended to cover basic living expenses for two months.

Get the school year off to a good start!
The Student Learning Center provides tutoring, study groups and adjunct courses for students. The Student Learning Center is located in the Cesar E. Chavez Student Center on lower Sproul Plaza; hours are Monday - Thursday 8 to 6, Friday 8 to 5.
Throughout the academic year, workshops on study and writing strategies geared towards students across the disciplines and in upper division courses are held in the SLC. The SLC staff offers Adjunct Courses linked to certain lecture courses, Study Strategies Seminar Courses, R&C 1A & 1B Writing workshops linked to certain sections of Reading and Composition, and Student Led Lecture Series Courses.

Leslie Lipson Scholarship and Prize
The Lipson Prize funds sophomores to engage in a research or creative project in the summer following their junior year. Awards amounts range up to $4,000, and are dependent upon available funds. Projects must relate to humanistic values and their implementation, and may address:

  • human rights issues,
  • bio-ethics,
  • the impact on developing societies of global capitalism,
  • or environmental concerns in the 21st Century, or
  • another issue related to humanistic values.

Physics is the study of the universe, from the very large to the very small, and everything in between. Our undergraduate program aims to provide a broad and solid background in fundamental physics through introductory course work, and then to engage all our majors who are interested in current research with some of the top research groups worldwide. The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship
The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship provides up to $7,500 per year for undergraduate educational expenses! Sophomores and juniors majoring in mathematics, sciences, and engineering who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents in the upper quarter of their class are eligible to apply. (November 18, 2002)
