College Launches illuminations Online Magazine

The College is pleased to announce the inaugural issue of a new online publication: illuminations. Every month, illuminations (http://illuminations.berkeley.edu) will spotlight different current research being undertaken in the arts and humanities by faculty and students in the College of Letters and Science and elsewhere on the Berkeley campus. The productive artists and humanities-discipline scholars at Berkeley utilize studios and libraries as their research laboratories, doing influential work that often revises accepted wisdom on human affairs.

illuminations features the research of an individual or group at Berkeley, elucidating their original interpretation of a text or other cultural phenomenon, or their creation of a new artistic work. illuminations also brings to light significant past scholars and their achievements as part of the Berkeley arts and humanities legacy. Whatever your educational background and professional field, from art practice to zoology, you will be intrigued and enlightened by this in-depth view of the cutting-edge scholarship in the arts and humanities happening at Berkeley.

The March 2005 issue features:

• "Office Space: Louise Mozingo Gets the Dirt on America's Corporate Landscapes": Corporate office parks line America's highways like trees along a forest path. Big-box buildings of glass and steel huddle amid spindly shrubs and vast parking lots in ever-expanding suburbs outside nearly every city in the country. These are the places where the nation does business.
• "The Berkeley Legacy: William Swinton, The Original Radical": Berkeley's first English professor ran with poets and presidents. He also tried to bring down the University.

illuminations is published online by the Division of Arts & Humanities in the College of Letters and Science at the University of California, Berkeley. We intend illuminations to notify and enlighten Berkeley alumni and friends about the cutting-edge research being performed by Berkeley faculty and students.
