Hrabowski Inspires Attendees at Berkeley Edge Conference. Citing W.E.B. DuBois, Dr. Hrabowski urged the student attendees to think of themselves as the "talented tenth," the best in the country who may well have the opportunity to come to "the best university in the world."

Chancellor Presents Vision for Undergraduate Educaton. At the October 17, 2005 Letters & Science Colloquium, Chancellor Robert Birgeneau expressed strong support for maintaining Berkeley's excellent reputation for excellence not only in research, but also in undergraduate education, and he confirmed his commitment to continue providing world class public education to the citizens of California.

Three L&S Faculty Awarded MacArthur 'Genius' Grants. When the MacArthur Foundation called, Lu Chen, Michael Manga and Nicole King all assumed it was for references on a colleague being considered for the famous MacArthur Foundation "genius" awards. Instead, the three were being notified that they themselves were among the 2005 recipients.

Don't Miss The College Presents: Science and the Soul. On Sept. 26, The College Presents celebrates the San Francisco Opera's world premiere of Doctor Atomic with a panel exploring J. Robert Oppenheimer’s role in the creation of the first atomic bomb as well as the historical, scientific, and musical background of the opera. The evening also features an exclusive musical preview.

Breslauer is New Executive Dean of the College of Letters & Science. George W. Breslauer, dean of the Division of Social Sciences for the past five years, has been appointed executive dean of the College of Letters & Science. He replaces Ralph J. Hexter, who recently became President of Hampshire College in Amherst, Mass.

October Symposium will Honor 90th Birthday of Charles Townes. In early October, UC Berkeley will host an internation symposium honoring professor emeritus Charles Townes, who won the 1964 Nobel Prize for physics.

New 'Discovery Courses' Embody Liberal Arts. Dean Robert Holub has created these courses to offer students a truly meaningful liberal arts experience. Nineteen Discovery Courses, taught by some of L&S's most distinguished professors, will be offered in 2005-2006.

L&S Executive Dean Hexter Named President of Hampshire College. Ralph J. Hexter, a scholar of classical and medieval literature and executive dean of the University of California, Berkeley's College of Letters & Science, will become president of Hampshire College in Amherst, Mass., on Aug. 1.

Deans' Corner — Unintelligent Designs and the Responsibility of Educators. Undergraduate Division Dean Robert Holub discusses 'intelligent design' and the responsibility of educators to promote scientific literacy.

The College Presents: Oliver Stone on Classic Filmmaking. Academy Award-winning director and filmmaker Oliver Stone comes to campus to discuss his recent major motion picture Alexander in relation to the scholarly pursuit of the classical tradition. Part of The College Presents, a free, public series of events sponsored by the College of Letters and Science.

L&S Colloquium Tackles Grades and Grading Philosophies. A panel of four distinguished administrators and faculty members, and an audience of faculty, staff, and students, gathered to discuss issues surrounding grades and grading philosophies.

College Launches illuminations Online Magazine. A new online publication illuminations spotlights different research being undertaken in the arts and humanities by faculty and students in the College of Letters and Science and elsewhere on the Berkeley campus.
