Great Mind Online: @cal Community Connects Alumni to Distinguished Author

Daniel Glick

By College Relations staff, September 25, 2003

College of Letters & Science alumnus Daniel Glick (Comparative Literature B.A. '81) left his Colorado home in the summer of 2001 with his two children for a six-month journey around the world. They traveled through places of ecological wonder now threatened by human development, including the coral reefs in Australia and Bali, the orangutan habitat in Borneo, and the Vietnamese jungle home of the last Javan rhinos in mainland Asia.   Monkey Dancing: A Father, Two Kids, and a Journey to the Ends of the Earth is the story of their adventure.

From September 26 to October 3, Glick will be a special guest on @cal — Berkeley's online alumni community (What is @cal?). He will begin by posting excerpts from his book and will then participate in online discussions with alumni. For more on the discussion, visit @cal.

Distinguished Alumnus Daniel Glick

In addition to Monkey Dancing, Glick is also the author of Powder Burn: Arson, Money and Mystery on Vail Mountain, an investigation into the costliest act of eco-terrorism in U.S. history. He worked at Newsweek magazine for 13 years; six as a Washington, D.C. correspondent and seven as a Colorado-based special correspondent covering the Rocky Mountain region. After moving to Colorado in late 1994, Glick covered a rash of high-profile stories, including the JonBenet Ramsey homicide, the Columbine High School tragedy, and the mysterious crash of a fully armed Air Force fighter jet.

Between completing his degrees in Comparative Literature in the College of Letters & Science (B.A. '81) and in the School of Journalism (M.J. '89) at UC Berkeley, Glick lived in Asia for three years, teaching French and English in Japan and herding yaks in Tibet. He is an avid outdoorsman experienced in climbing, hiking, skiing and kayaking, and has lived on four continents. A native Californian, Glick now resides in Colorado with his two children.

What is @cal?

@cal is UC Berkeley's online alumni community offering a suite of e-services to anyone who studied at Cal, or is a member of the California Alumni Association.

Members of @cal stay connected to each other and up-to-date on news and events in the College of Letters & Science and across campus. Among its most desirable offerings is free e-mail forwarding with an @berkeley.edu address. Members engage in e-mail discussions with leading scholars, thinkers, and fellow alumni, search for and find friends in the online directory, and even view the latest Cal events via webcasts. @cal also features career tools for networking with other Cal alumni and hosts e-mail discussion lists on a variety of topics.

To Join

Joining the community is as easy as visiting the @cal site and clicking on "New users/sign up." Alumni will be prompted to enter a unique PIN, which can be obtained on the @cal website.

The @cal project is sponsored by UC Berkeley and the California Alumni Association, in partnership with the campus's 14 schools and colleges, and the Cal Career Center.
