Alumni Connect @Cal: Great Minds OnlineBy College Relations staff, October 3, 2003
College of Letters & Science alumni can stay connected to Cal and to each other online through @cal — UC Berkeley’s online community. @cal offers a suite of e-services to anyone who studied at Cal, or is a member of the California Alumni Association. Currently, more than 30,000 UC Berkeley alumni are members and more than half of those alums graduated from the College of Letters & Science. Members of @cal stay in touch with each other and up-to-date on news and events in the College and across campus.
Through @cal, members can engage in e-mail discussions with leading scholars, thinkers, and fellow alumni. Most recently, distinguished author and College alumnus Daniel Glick (B.A. ’81, Comparative Literature) was a special guest on @cal. He chatted online about his new book, Monkey Dancing: A Father, Two Kids, and a Journey to the Ends of the Earth, which chronicles his six-month journey around the world with his two children. Together, they traveled through places of ecological wonder now threatened by human development, including the coral reefs in Australia and Bali, the orangutan habitat in Borneo, and the Vietnamese jungle home of the last Javan rhinos in mainland Asia. Other desirable offerings on @cal include free e-mail forwarding with an @berkeley.edu address and a directory for searching for and finding friends. Alumni entering the job market for the first time or planning a job transition will also enjoy @cal's Career Tools for networking with other Cal alumni. In addition, @cal hosts e-mail discussion lists on a variety of topics and webcasts of recent Cal events. To Join Joining the community is as easy as visiting the @cal site and clicking on "New users/sign up." Alumni will be prompted to enter a unique PIN, which can be obtained on the @cal website. The @cal project is sponsored by UC Berkeley and the California Alumni Association, in partnership with the College of Letters & Science and the other 13 schools and colleges, and the Cal Career Center. |
