CNN/TIME Has Chosen Carlos Bustamante and Tim White as Two of "America's Best in Science and Medicine"By Genevieve Shiffrar October 1, 2001 This year, TIME Magazine has selected L&S's own Carlos Bustamante and Tim White as two of "America's Best in Science and Medicine." These faculty members share the honor with 16 other scientists and doctors specializing in fields such as astrophysics, stem cell research and pediatrics. Carlos Bustamante, a Howard Hughes Investigator and Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology, was selected for his groundbreaking research manipulating mechanically single molecules. His novel techniques have led him to tease apart proteins and nucleic acids to see the ways in which they unfold into complex structures. Read TIME's profile of Dr. Bustamante to learn more about his methods and accomplishments and the applications of his results. Tim White is a paleoanthropologist in the Department of Integrative Biology and co-director of the Laboratory for Human Evolutionary Studies. He has been instrumental in collaborations which have redefined early hominid history, found the oldest known human ancestor, and proposed that bipedalism began in the forest rather than the savannah. Dr. White's profile in TIME describes further the ways in which he has played a major role our current understanding of the early human family tree. UC Berkeley also has available a rich variety of multimedia content regarding the discovery of Ardipthecus ramidus kadabba. Dean Paul Licht of L&S's Division of Biological Sciences congratulates Professors Bustamante and White not only for this recognition, but more importantly for their extraordinary scientific accomplishments. |
