Michael Dickinson Named MacArthur "Genius"
Integrative Biology Professor Michael Dickinson, aka "Flyman,"
has been selected by the MacArthur Foundation as one of its "genius"
fellows for his innovative research of the flight control mechanisms
of flies. (October 29, 2001)
Major Exploration Faire, Major Success
The L&S Office of Undergraduate Advising, in association
with the Career Center, presented one of the most ambitious events offered
in recent years to help undeclared students identify the many opportunities

Goldman Professor George Akerlof Wins the 2001
Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences
Professor George Akerlof shares the prize with two other economists
for their individual acheivements in defining and understanding markets
with asymmetric information. This is the second Nobel Prize for the
Economics Department in two years. (October 11, 2001)
Carlos Bustamante and Tim White Selected
by CNN/TIME as "America's Best in Science and Medicine"
Labeled by CNN/TIME as the "Protein Wizard" and the "Man
Hunter," Professors Carlos Bustamante and Tim White have been recognized
for their contributions to science in the fields of molecular mechanics
and paleoanthropology. (October 1, 2001)

Former Dean and Provost Carol Christ Named President
of Smith College
Professor Carol Christ will assume the presidency of Smith College in
June, 2002. From her initial hire in 1970 to the present, she has contributed
significantly to Letters & Scienceas faculty member, chair,

Department
of Dramatic Art Changes Its Name
The Department's new name, Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies,
better reflects Berkeley's commitment to a wide ranging education in

The American Academy of Arts and Sciences'
New Members
Seven L&S faculty, representing the breadth of scholarship in the
College, have been elected to membership in one of America's preeminent

Five L & S faculty members established a program in the 1960s to

Art
The Consortium for the Arts hosts the first annual ArtsBridge exhibition,
