Colleagues,

Chancellor Birgeneau has committed to lowering greenhouse gas
emissions on the UC Berkeley campus to 1990 levels by 2014. This is
quite a challenge, considering much has changed on the campus in the
last 19 years. A significant change has been the dramatic increase in
the use of computers -- computing equipment has become a critical
resource for the campus. Despite the improved efficiency of newer
machines, we have experienced a steady growth in the overall energy
that computing consumes.

Many departments on campus have been exploring and implementing energy-
saving measures, such as power management software, CRT replacement,
server co-location, server virtualization, and desktop
virtualization. We still have a lot of energy to save and need
everyone in the campus IT community to participate. The OCIO has
created a website to serve as a means to communicate about the energy-
saving ideas and projects happening throughout our IT community. It
would also serve as a repository for energy efficient information, as
well as a medium to help educate the campus about our collective
energy-saving efforts. The new website is available at
<greencomputing.berkeley.edu>. Comments and questions about the site
and the address to send contributions to the site content can be sent
to greencomputing_at_berkeley.edu.
