XML courses at SIMS

I sympathize with Eric Fong trying to learn XML because I think most XML
courses and books are completely focused on the syntax and miss the big
picture.

For those of you looking to learn XML -- and more importantly, how to think
about information architecture and application design from the standards
and Internet-friendly perspective enabled by XML -- take a look at two
courses we're teaching at SIMS in the Spring Semester:

Document Enginering

Laboratory in Document Engineering

I invited campus IT folks to take these classes last year and had about 8
of you. I taught a shortened version of the former class this last summer
and another 20 or 30 of you came.

And you're all invited back (for free), subject to two limitations:

1) I need to give priority to SIMS and other students who need to take this
for credit, but as long as there is room in South Hall 202 you're welcome

2) You are serious about coming on a regular basis so you can contribute
your real-world experiences to the classroom. It is really good for
students to learn about the legacy computing issues and other constraints
that you all have to deal with. But this means you need your management's
permission to spend the half day a week (at least) coming to class, doing
readings ... and if you can spend more time you'll get more out of it

Maybe some of you (like Aron Roberts?) who sat in on previous courses of
mine can comment on whether this approach works and encourage Eric to dive in.
