Most of our enhanced web features rely on Flash 4 or 5; we also do
streaming video using either RealPlayer or Quicktime, and the
chancellor's audio interviews stream through RealPlayer. The
Webcasts from ETS also depend on RealPlayer. All of those
technologies are free downloads, and we generally include
download links on the host pages from which the multimedia
content can be launched.
Our goal has been to use the simplest, most widely available
technology possible to present our enhanced content, and we've
had little to no negative feedback about our efforts. Does that mean
we're not leaving anyone out? Sadly, no; some computers are old
enough or modest enough that they can't install the required
players, or have been configured to prevent their users from doing
so. And some visitors simply choose not to bother with a software
download to play the feature. We don't have stats on what
percentage of www.berkeley.edu visitors have specific players
installed, but web-wide stats put the installed base for Flash and
RealPlayer in the mid-90%s or higher.
