Hi Ana and Webnet -
Slicing up the large images on your pages may make pieces of them appear
faster, but it will still take visitors the same amount of time to load the
entire image. Those with slow connections won't have to see a blank screen
for as long, but since you have navigational links and information all over
those images, they will still be unable to use the page until the entire
image loads.
If you have to use a large image (and at 200KB, those are large images),
look into image size optimization (or compression) software. There are a
number of small utilities available on the web that can reduce the size (in
bytes) of your images without a noticeable loss of quality. A quick google
search will reveal more, but one I found quickly and for free at
http://www.xat.com/jpegopt/index.html was able to cut the size of (and thus
the time it takes to load) your graduate group page in half.
There may even be a similar tool included in Fireworks.
Good luck,
