Hi all,
For more context on content management systems including Zope, see my
Fall 2002 BC&C article, which includes an overview of CMSes and links to
an extended interview of Chris re: Zope (link is at the very bottom of
the main story).

As I understand it, the dynamic nature of Chris's site is not part of
the definition of a CMS. Most CMSes produce static pages but can be
linked to databases for dynamic pages.
Dynmaic pages are served directly from the database, on the Web
visitor's request. Any updates are reflected immediately, without your
having to "post" the update to the Web server first. Static pages might
be stored in a database (as in a CMS's "repository"), but are static
once they are published to the Web server. There is no direct access to
the database by the Web visitor; the pages are updated only when you
publish them again. Weblogs are simple CMSes that produce static pages.
I don't know if Zope is only for building dynamic pages; Chris, can it
be configured to build static pages as well?
As an example, UCSD's Blink site is not dynamic, but it is built using
the Vignette commercial CMS:
(If you want to play with the Blink editing interface, write me and I'll
give you the user name and password.)
Another CMS you can try out is one built by two SIMS graduates, called
Press Express; it too serves up static pages:

By contrast, Chris's calendar pages are dynamic:
http://zeta.msri.org/calendar/index.html
So are most tech support Knowledge Pages, product catalogs, and similar
frequently updated, data-intensive Web sites.
Several of Chris's main points are worth remembering:
* You can never plan ahead too much.
* You will need programmer(s) to build a CMS or to customize a
commercial CMS.
* With a CMS, you will be able to distribute content management among
the content owners, who do not need to know HTML.
cheers,
Pat
