New UC Software Reseller
The UC system has selected a new reseller to handle orders under UC's
volume software agreements. These contracts cover products for
departmental use. The new reseller is Technology Resource Center
(TRC), located in West Dundee, Illinois, outside Chicago. TRC will
replace Software Spectrum as the UC reseller effective 10/1/01. The
TRC agreement number is 087/OP/058.
The vendors whose contracts will be handled by TRC are Microsoft
(Select program), Adobe, FileMaker, IBM/Lotus and Symantec.
Additional vendors may be added in the future.
Many products from the above vendors are also available to Berkeley
departments through the campus computer store, The Scholar's
Workstation. However, under the UC agreements, licenses are
generally available separately from media, which provides a cost
saving when many machines are managed together, as in an
instructional lab.
Several months ago, after being notified that Software Spectrum
planned to move away from the academic market, the University
initiated a bid process to select a new reseller. Responses were
received from six resellers. They were evaluated using many criteria
including the ability to handle a large number of University
accounts, proposed services, and pricing. TRC scored well in all
areas.
TRC Information Sources
TRC is already working to set up a University-specific website with
truly current pricing and ways of communicating news about the
University licensing programs. A mockup is currently available, but
it is not really functional yet. The address is:

TRC representatives will be visiting the Berkeley Campus to meet with
departmental representatives. A tentative schedule for this is
Monday, November 5th, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm in 60 Barrows.

Purchasing Procedures
Campus departments can place orders directly with TRC. For phone
orders, product availability, and pricing, departments can call
800-517-2320, extension 209. Orders can also be faxed to the number
shown above.
TRC needs contact information on purchase orders in order to complete
fulfillment of the orders. TRC normally sends license confirmations
and (when needed) product serial numbers via email. To make this
possible, each order should provide contact information for the
person in the department who is responsible for the order, namely:
Personal Name
Dept. name
Dept. address
Campus phone number
Email address
Purchasing procedures for Microsoft Select products are different
from before. For Microsoft Select products, TRC has a special
arrangement with Compucom. All Microsoft Select purchases made
through TRC will be passed to Compucom and fulfilled by Microsoft.
Purchase orders for Microsoft Select products should be issued to
"Compucom c/o TRC" (using Compucom's Federal Tax ID in BFS) and sent
to TRC. Invoices will come from Compucom, and Compucom should be
paid directly.
