Helen-
While I've used ASP several times in the past, I would *NOT* consider it the
best option for web scripting / database access. Take a moment to look at
http://php.net/ PHP is a web scripting language based loosely on perl. It has
all the database accessability of ASP and then some. It is also far more
portable, a script written for use on IIS under NT is typically usable under
Unix/Apache with little to no modification. Further, PHP supports many features
simply not found in ASP (for a list, see the Documentation under php.net).
Overall, I rate the big three web scripting languages as follows:
* PHP
Pros: Fast, Scalable, Portable, Extensible, Online Documentation is second
to none, supports WIDE range of functions
Cons: A little harder to learn for those without experience in Perl, Java, or C
* ASP
Pros: Already built into IIS (PHP, as a third party extension requires a
short installation process -- this is a weak plus)
Cons: Limited functionality, non-portable, file-uploads are obfuscate and
awkward
* Cold Fusion
Pros: Extremely easy to learn for the non-programmer, good technical support
for vendor and third parties, somewhat portable to other platforms
Cons: Almost zero extensibility, very limited functionality, slow
I'd be happy to provide support in getting php setup and getting accostomed to
using it via email if you're interrested...
