Thanks all for your input.
I haven't contacted the UC Merced folks from Aaron's post yet, but one of
the costing issues of vga over cat 5 (I misspoke in the original post saying
vga over IP) are distance signal degradation considerations and multi subnet
use. The VGA\Audio over cat 5 implementations that I have seen (from
MicroCom) degrade over distance, their higher end products compensate for
this for a price. Also if this is to be done over various subnets the cost
of replicating the infrastructure on a per subnet basis (because it is not
routable) begins to make the thin client option more competitive
economically.
LCD does seem to be the way to go regarding burn-in, we currently have a
Samsung Plasma and apparently the burn-in issue is less of a problem than
from a few years ago but LCD still wins out. Our content will be quite
varied so we hope we'll be OK.
Thanks again,
Alan

Hi, Alan - long time no see. I agree with Christopher for such needs,
and the new Samsung's a bit brighter. Your decision may differ,
depending on your criteria, including:
Is your content static (burn in issues)? What are your ambient light
conditions (contrast, brightness)? Are you doing sound? Are you going
to buy a turnkey package deal or do some inhouse
install/development/maintenance? Will you have much video/fleshtones or
mostly text/graphics? Are you going to have it on 7x24 or just a couple
of hours/day? Will it need to be interactive, wayfinding, or just one
way FYI?
What is your budget, capital/operating?
Enjoy - let me know if you need a quick recommendation on vendor/model
for your needs,
Ferenc

We are in the process of doing this for the second floor of Cory Hall.
We ended up purchasing 40" Sony LCD FWD40LX. This model is designed
for signage, as opposed to going to CostCo and picking up a home tv.
The resolution (1366x768) and size (40") of this unit is a little
small. However, these units have capabilities for being managed, and
have a warranty suited for the application. We considered plasma, but
the power consumption is higher and there is a risk of burn-in.
Samsung also has some commercial signage products that might be worth
a look.
These displays will be connected to a PC running Linux with a direct
VGA connection. I don't have any experience with VGA over IP. Since
networks go up and down, my primary concern would be: What happens
when the network goes down? Hopefully the image freezes as opposed
to a message coming up.
We considered going with a commercial company to provide a solution,
but have in house staff to handle the content. We will be displaying
seminar info pulled from the campus calendar and news items.
We also have these photovu displays that have worked reasonably well
as a way to display images. They do what they need to do well, but
they are small (we have 17 or 19", 22" is avail.). One possible
solution would be to generate images from the browser and display
those using PhotoVus.

Hi,
We would like to display web content to one or more plasma screens
on the
same subnet in one of our facilities. Has anyone had any experience
implementing a similar setup?
We have investigated one provider of vga over IP (Minicom) in use by
anothe
r
campus department. We have also considered thin clients at the
screen
sites. Any other ideas\vendor suggestions?
Thanks,
Alan
