Hi all,
Since there was a discussion this am about whether there was a
micronet meeting, I'll resend the email below.
There has been a change of schedule. Shel Waggener will be speaking
on January 15 on the IT Bank "How the campus is investing in
Technology and Technology Staff" and hold Q&A.
I am firming up the topics for a Dell presentation for
February. Specifically I would like to address the topic of Dell
Image Direct and, if time, see if there is interest or time to
discuss in server virtualization and storage.
In March I am planning on having speakers from TAM and from UCB's
data center speak on moving servers to the data center, what is
involved, experiences with the data center.
As always, if you are interested in any topics, please let me
know. If you would like to do a presentation, please let me know.

>Hi all,
>I would like to announce that there will be no Micronet meetings in
>November and December. I thought that we are all very busy with the
>end of the academic year and the holidays and that one, or two, less
>meetings might be a good idea.
>
>We will be back in January. Below is our tentative schedule:
>
>In January (1/15) (now moved to February) we will have a speaker
>from Dell on one of the topics most requested in the survey we did last month:
> System Imaging Tools from Dell
> Server virtualization Trends
> Storage technology
> Business resumption issues
>
>In February (2/19) Shel Waggener will speak about computing
>questions of concern to the campus community. Bring your
>questions. (moved to January)
>
>In March (3/18) ( Speaker from TAM) we will continue with a topic
>from the Dell survey.
>
>The following are a few possible topics for the future. Please let
>me know if you are interested.
> -Symantec Ghost: what works and what doesn't
> -Purchasing computers and software for UC departments (and
> UC employees): how do you decide what to purchase, what is
> available. We could invite Kin Jung from Scholars to explain
> their plans for the future for hardware and software.
> -Security Update from campus experts on how to secure your
> network and work with sensitive data
> -Business resumption plan Does your department have a plan
> and are you coordinating with the office of
> Business Resumption. Do you use the The Berkeley Continuity
> Planning Tool (BCPT)
>
>Very late summary of the October meeting:
>We invited 5 staff working in IT on the Berkeley campus to discuss
>their experiences and offer their perspectives on how to develop an
>IT career on campus. The following very generously took the time
>to tell us about the jobs they have had here on the Berkeley campus.
>
>Graham Patterson, System Administrator, Lawrence Hall of Science
>Michael Sinatra, 'Network Busboy V' (wonder what this maps to?), IS&T
>Amber Sanchez, Programmer/Analyst I in the Law School
>Kevin Zimmerman, System Administrator, Berkeley Wireless Research Center
>Usha Manandhar, Programmer/Analyst, IS&T Client Services
>
>What emerged as important was finding a job or jobs where you can
>develop your skills and knowledge. Getting a mentor, taking part in
>informal groups like Micronet and Webnet, and doing your own career
>planning were also mentioned. There are few resources for training
>for staff at the university. Programs like the Career Development
>Opportunity Program (CDOP) and tuition remission are no longer
>available, though most staff would like to see a return of these.
>
>Mark Spitzer, the account executive for Dell at UC Berkeley, offered
>to bring in speakers for future meetings or to organize short
>courses on a variety of topics of our choosing.
>
>Micronet meetings:
> Where: 150 University Hall
> When: Third Tuesday of the month, 10:30-noon
> Do you wish to make a presentation at Micronet? What do
