I have a slightly different position from Jon (which is not unusual
8-)). For small IT operations which may buy machines over a period of a
year or so, rather than as large single orders, there is something to be
said for an identical hardware platform as it keeps the parts and driver
interchangability under control. The Gold tech support was handy and
quick - with the option of a technician if you needed one.
All the custom build stuff is really nice, but rarely needed at
department level.
Our support models vary too, and that has a bearing on the choice. The
hardware is only part of the equation. Choice is good.
