mixing FileMaker 7/8/9, server & client

The FileMaker folks suggest that there is a good deal of compatibility
across versions 7, 8 & 9; they have documentation like this:

"FileMaker Pro 9 databases use the same file format (.fp7) as
FileMaker Pro 8 and FileMaker Pro 7, therefore databases can easily be
shared between these three versions. Features specific to the newer
versions, are only supported in the newer versions..."

We have an installation of FileMaker Server 7, and several dozen
FileMaker Pro 7 clients. We have one or two instances FileMaker Pro 8
clients, and they seem to be rather happy to use the shared databases
hosted on the server. We'll be needing to buy some new licenses (v.
9) soon, and would love to know if folks have found any problems
mixing 7/8/9 clients connecting to .fp7 databases on Server 7.

All indications are pretty good, but we haven't been able to dig up
documentation that definitely rules this in or out.

Thanks!
-Greg
