Hi Bond,

You may want to have a go with the "TouchUp Text Tool". In my
version of Acrobat (v.7, Mac) it's under "Tools... Advanced
Editing..." This tool lets you do some simple edit of text elements,
and may do the trick for you.

This is definitely an area for being careful -- there have been some
pretty high-profile snafus along these lines:
