Errors copying photos to 1 GB memory cards

I have 323 Objects representing 236MB of memory. I try to copy and paste
to a 1.0GB SanDisk Memory Stick PRO Duo but it only takes 211 objects at
140.2MB of memory. I've tried several different methods including copying
a photo at a time from my hard drive to the memory stick. When it reaches
a certain point it won't allow me to add any more. I get the following
error message: Cannot copy "name of file": The directory or file cannot be
created.

I have another 1GB SD card and have essentially the same problem. What am
I doing wrong? How do I store 1 gig of stuff on these 1 gig cards?

Thanks,
Monica
