Seconding Rusty's suggestion: web-based calendars, including free
Web-based calendars or the relatively low-cost CalAgenda service ($25 to
start, $20 per year) - which is accessible from both web and desktop
clients - facilitate access from multiple locations and, particularly,
from multiple computers. They're great if you need to use a computer at
a conference, for example, or at a friend's or family member's house,
and you can also access them from Web-capable PDAs or cell phones.
CalAgenda also provides wireless (via SyncML) and wired syncing with
calendaring software running on mobile devices based on Microsoft and
Palm OSes.

As for desktop-based calendars, many Windows users already have
Microsoft Outlook, a component of Microsoft Office which includes
calendaring capabilities; and many Macintosh users already have iCal, a
calendaring application that has long been bundled with Mac OS X.

If you or your user want to search download sites for freeware or
shareware desktop calendaring software for Windows, a few places that
come immediately to mind are Tucows and the downloads sites run by ZDNet
and CNET; I'm sure others can contribute more suggestions. Mac users
can find downloads on several of those same sites, as well as
VersionTracker and MacUpdate; and there are similar download sites for
Linux and some other OSes. Some of these sites offer software reviews,
or forums for users to comment on and rate software, so you can often
readily identify well-liked, "5-star" (or equivalent) products.
