   I'm sure we'll learn more about this over time, but here's what

According to posters in this discussion, Spotlight may allow
searching of unindexed networked volumes, and may be able to reference
Spotlight index databases stored on remote server volumes, such as
volumes mounted from a Tiger Server.

According to a poster in this discussion, there is a Spotlight CLI command
that may be able to manually - and slowly - generate a Spotlight index on
a remote volume. (If the remote volume isn't offered by a Mac running
Tiger, presumably this would be the only way to keep the index up to date.)
