Expect 'name and password' errors on CalMail/UCLink starting today

CalMail (aka UCLink) will be requiring secure (SSL/TLS-encrypted)
connections starting today, Tuesday, March 1. Authentication (SMTP
AUTH) when sending mail to non-CalMail addresses will also be
required.

Users who have not yet updated their settings in email programs
such as Eudora or Outlook to reflect these changes, will suddenly
find themselves unable to either receive or send email via CalMail.
(Some home users may be able to send email via their ISP's SMTP
servers.)

Four salient points to help you in supporting your users:

   1) The error messages that many users will see **will look very
much like bad username and password errors**.

Their email programs will display error messages like
"incorrect password or account name" or "The server has rejected
      your login."

Another frequently encountered type of error message will
inaccurately state that the **server is unavailable**,
or simply report that the connection failed.

Some random samples of typical error messages appear below,
so that you can get a flavor of what these will look like.

   2) You can direct any users who have not yet updated their settings,
and thus are experiencing these problems, to the CalMail
      Knowledge Base.

The canonical starting page, with links to instructions for
changing settings in many email programs, is:

      http://kb.berkeley.edu/kb400

   3) Users who are experiencing problems, and desperately need to
check their email RIGHT NOW, can do so via the Web at:

      http://calmail.berkeley.edu
      or
      https://bearmail.berkeley.edu

   4) CalMail Consulting and other central consulting services are
likely to be *heavily* impacted. Users should probably not
expect prompt replies. It is possible that responses from
some consulting services may even take several days.

      During this time ...

Information on resolving some specific problems will be added
to the CalMail Knowledge Base this week, and you can lookup
      issues and/or refer users there:

      http://kb.berkeley.edu

If you encounter issues that are affecting multiple users,
please also post these to a general computing support
mailing list, such as (particularly) the Micronet list,
      <http://micronet.berkeley.edu>.
