As Karl Grose wrote in another context:

Since Symantec AntiVirus's Internet Email Auto-Protect scanner
appears to be active in your situation, however, you'll need to turn
it off, which is consistent with the somewhat generic advice you
received from CalMail Consulting:

Here's an Indiana University Knowledge Base article which claims to
describe how to do this:
http://kb.indiana.edu/data/apat.html?cust=768503.63012.30
- From the Start menu, select Symantec Client Security, and then
Symantec AntiVirus.
[In campus installations of SCS, this might be Start > All Programs >
Symantec Client Security > Symantec AntiVirus]
- Click Configure, and then Internet Email Auto-Protect.
- Uncheck Enable Internet Email Auto-Protect.
*If those instructions work for you, I'll suggest to the CalMail
folks that they add a similar article to that email system's
Knowledge Base.

P.S. This issue may also affect campus users of the retail product,
Norton AntiVirus for Windows, as well as users of Symantec AntiVirus,
which is a component of the campus site-licensed Symantec Client
Security (SCS).
