   I'm not a frequent Windows user, but from a quick Google search, it
appears that there are a number of alternatives to Notepad, such as
rsEditor <http://www.rimrocksoftware.com/rsedit.html> (free) and
UltraEdit <http://www.ultraedit.com/> (commercial, 45-day free
trial), which offer columnar editing capabilities.
