Re: Berkeley home page - access denied - Inquiry

Hi Steve,

In addition to re-checking the hosts file, as per Sara Golemon's
good suggestions, and determining if a host-based firewall is active
and if so, checking its settings, as Mike Hunter suggested, here are
a few more off-the-cuff suggestions:

- check the IP addresses of the DNS servers
- look at the proxy settings in the affected browsers
- scan for spyware/adware, which can redirect web requests
- perhaps even check for a generic TCP proxy server running
   on the machine

Mike's suggestions that you telnet to port 80 at www.berkeley.edu
and/or use tracert are also excellent. The former should do the
trick of showing you what is happening 'behind the scenes', and can
also help isolate whether the problem is specific to the two browsers
or is generic to the machine.

As an aside, if you should ever need to take a more detailed look
at network traffic, tools that can display all TCP traffic coming in
and out of a specified connection can be very handy. Ethereal
<http://www.ethereal.com/> looks like an extremely full-featured,
open source tool for that purpose; perhaps other list members may
have additional favorites to suggest. (I've occasionally found
tcpflow handy for this purpose under Mac OS X, but don't have any
direct experience with the corresponding tools for Windows.)
