As announced in February, the campus is implementing Financial Leave Accrual,
utilizing the central Payroll Personnel System (PPS) as the system of record for
leave accrual. Therefore, PPS will be distributed to a wide audience of payroll
administrators across campus, many of whom are supported by the Micronet
community. Currently the central payroll office is delivering training to the
departmental payroll administrators. Upon successful completion of this
training, the departmental payroll administrators will be granted access to PPS,
a mainframe application. Given the sensitivity of this data, and also as
specified in the campus Minimum Standards Policy, it is important that the
access method be secure and encrypted. As you may have heard, the campus is
implementing a VPN solution to access this secure mainframe application. The
VPN client is simple to install, and will be downloadable from
software.berkeley.edu. Departmental payroll administrators will have access to
PPS beginning in July and will need to download and install this client, which
is currently being tested. A process for support from a central help desk will
also be outlined when the client is made available online.
To prepare departmental IT staff for this, and to answer any questions you might
have, we will be presenting a technical overview of the solution, focusing on
client installation issues, at the next Micronet meeting on July 20th - 10:00am
to 12:00pm - 775 Tan Hall. All IT staff who support payroll administrators are
encouraged to attend.
We will also be discussing the recently approved Campus Policy - Minimum
Security Standards for Networked Devices.
