I use a combination method like what you might be looking for. On my main
computer, I have Local Folders set up under Eudora or Thunderbird and move
larger/older emails into them. On my laptop, it's IMAP access only.

How this affects looking for things is that you won't have access to the
older files unless you're at the computer. I think the new 100MB limit
should be more than enough for 99% of users, unless you're sending around
music/video.
