Beta Test Announcement for C@B Secure CD-ROM

From: Karl R. Grose <krgrose_at_uclink.berkeley.edu>
Date: Tue Dec 09 2003 - 15:01:25 PST

We would like to invite former C@B testers, former Symantec Client
Firewall testers, and any other interested parties to participate in a
beta review and test of the forthcoming C@B Secure CD-ROM. See below
for some details about the CD and visit the C@B Beta web:

  http://cab.berkeley.edu/beta/

To participate, please send me e-mail and you will be authorized for
download of an ISO image of the CD and added to the cab-testers@listlink
majordomo mailing list. You can also request that a CD-ROM be mailed to
your campus address.

Please let us know via the cab-testers list any problems you encounter
and also any suggestions for improving the installer program or other
aspects of the CD. We are working on a companion web site and plan to
produce the CD-ROM in volume for distribution at no charge for campus
users. An accompanying insert will contain the "How to use this CD"
information found under the "Help" button in the CD installer software.

Thanks,

--Karl

======= Information about the C@B Secure CD-ROM =======

Connecting@Berkeley Secure ("C@B Secure") is a free CD-ROM prepared by
IST-WSS's C@B Service team. The CD can be used to enhance the basic
security of Windows computers. We are also hoping to have versions of
Norton Antivirus and Norton Personal Firewall for Mac OS available on a
later beta release of the CD.

The C@B Secure CD is especially appropriate for preparing a computer to
be connected to the campus network. It can help in preparing a computer
system to comply with several of the proposed minimum security
standards for connection to the Berkeley network, as described in the
draft:

  http://socrates.berkeley.edu:2002/MinStds/AppA.min.htm

The C@B Secure CD is available now exclusively for beta testing by
campus support providers. In its current version, it incorporates the
Symantec Client Security 8.1 product and other utilities and Windows
service packs. See the C@B Beta web for more details:

  http://cab.berkeley.edu/beta/

The C@B Secure CD can be used to install:

   - Service packs: SP1a for Windows XP and SP4 for Windows 2000.

   - A Windows policy that will enable automatic downloading and
     installation of Microsoft critical updates.

   - Symantec Client Security, an integrated package consisting of
anti-virus, personal firewall, and intrusion detection software
to provide comprehensive protection against a variety of threats.

   - Optionally, the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer 1.1.1, which
analyzes Windows systems for common security misconfigurations.

The C@B Secure CD is a one-time, standalone supplement to the
Connecting@Berkeley CD. The functionality of the C@B Secure CD will
likely be fully incorporated into the next Connecting@Berkeley CD,
which is scheduled for release in August 2004.
