I'm experimenting with FreeBSD on a couple of machines for just this
reason. I managed to get 5.1 running stable, but only after recompiling
the kernel and reinstalling several packages. Foolish me, I should have
started with 4.9 which is supposed to be more stable.
I'm finding that compared to redhat, there is a lot less support, and
probably less users too.
If you want another version of linux, I've used Mandrake in the past and it
was superior to redhat.
